What is Occupational Therapy?

An Occupational Therapist (OT) is a regulated health care professional who works with people to help them do what they want to do and need to do in order to lead satisfying and productive lives. Occupational Therapists work with people of all ages with various physical and mental disorders to decrease the impact of disability and to enhance their quality of life.

Is Occupational Therapy for you?

Occupational Therapists may assist you in some of the following ways:
  • Learn new ways to perform daily activities in spite of physical, cognitive or emotional challenges; for example planning and making meals, managing finances and paying bills on time, and shopping for groceries
  • Increase strength, endurance, tolerance and hand function for daily activities
  • Develop strategies to cope with anxiety, stress, poor self-esteem, decreased energy, memory difficulties or pain issues
  • Make changes to the environments in which you work and play to make them more accessible for you and to prevent further injury
  • Provide devices such as self-care aids, safety equipment and assistive technologies to get you involved in meaningful activities
  • Develop new skills, abilities and interests to balance work and leisure time
